We'll meet on the Continental Square, which is the intersection of George and Market Streets. I usually have name tags available and a sign-in sheet in order to share post-walk information with everyone. The photowalks usually start with a traditional group photograph.
We'll head east on Market Street, passing the Court House, the Yorktowne Hotel, the library, many homes of interest and the beautiful First Presbyterian Church. Our resource book provides lots of information on Market Street architecture.
We'll head up a short two blocks on North Pine, then head west on a residential area of Philadelphia Street, viewing the Goodridge House, the Hoover Wagon Company (York Dispatch) and Central Market, which should be open as we pass.
Continuing on West Philadelphia, we'll see the ornate Old York Post Office, which served from 1895-1912. The next block offers the York Meeting House, built in 1766. The meetinghouse is still in use today.
As we approach the Codorus Creek, we can take any creek-side photos we'd like and move down Pershing Avenue, passing the Colonial Complex. The Gates House, Plough Tavern and Bobb Log House offer tours for a fee, but offer easy and free access to outside photographs.
Heading west on Market, we'll quickly come upon the York County Colonial Courthouse, a replica of the 1755 structure originally standing in Continental Square. Retail shops lead us down a bit more on Market, where we can move to the other side of the street for a return stroll back toward the square.
Market Street offers more views of the Codorus Creek, a Korean War Memorial, and many small retail shops. In 1911, Bon-Ton expanded its primary store into the downtown area. County government offices now utilize the building. Immediately next door is a 1958 structure built to the original appearance of a historic building that served as General Wayne's headquarters in 1781. Trinity United Church of Christ rounds out the Market Street stretch back to the square, where we can spend some time.
Our walk concludes on a short stretch of South George Street as we walk to the Christ Lutheran Church, the oldest Lutheran congregation west of the Susquehanna River. The land was given to the congregation by William Penn's heirs in 1741.
