I (and other "non-career" photographers) have a certain liberty in regard to the subjects we photograph. Since I don't have a client to please, I can experiment in topics and venture into new areas where I do not have any expertise. I/we can play with landscapes one day, shoot architecture another, and focus on a trivial item with a macro lens when interested. Similarly, different techniques can be jumped between, exploring duotones, black and white, or even infrared.
This exploration and learning go hand in hand. As a teacher, I know that opportunities to pick up new skills often come from looking at areas outside our own comfort zone. While I don't do any wedding photography, looking at the work of the best photographers in that area can lead to some new ideas and skills that can transfer to photography that I do work with. A well-composed image in event photography shares many traits with composing any other style of photograph. Because photographers in the wedding industry have only one chance (or even one release of the shutter) to get the job done correctly, their planning and vision is paramount to the success of their work.
A name that is increasingly visible in the photography world is Crash Taylor, a photographer with a varied international presence. Raised in Los Angeles, Crash has spent significant time in Spain and works primarily in the U.K. His wedding work is clearly different than that of the typical American photographer. Each photograph is approached as art, and offers a story by itself.
Crash has had a web presence for some time in various forms, sharing insight into his own work as well as sharing the actual photographs. He has recently expanded into yet another educational area by offering interviews with well-known and respected wedding and event photographers considered to be the leaders in their photographic area. "Photographer Interviews with Crash Taylor" is a separate site within his web portfolio, already offering more than a dozen interviews, all worth reading and studying.
Fortunately, the excellent text is supplemented by images from each interviewee, and presented in a fairly large format where one can examine the elements that make each both unique and successful.
Regardless of your area of interest in photography, I'd suggest that your time would be well spent learning from Crash and the other professionals at Photographer Interviews by Crash Taylor.
