The Table is Set
The Table is Set
Excerpt from The Dinner Hour
by Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton, 1831–1895
We may live without poetry, music, and art;
We may live without conscience, and live without heart;
We may live without friends; we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks.
He may live without books,—what is knowledge but grieving?
He may live without hope,—what is hope but deceiving?
He may live without love,—what is passion but pining?
But where is the man that can live without dining?

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of being behind the scenes at the Sheppard Mansion (Hanover, PA) during a busy Saturday evening of wonderful foods, hungry guests, a lovely piece of architecture and the skills of the talented staff. After almost five hours, I walked away with some visual impressions of what it takes to prepare excellent food for customers expecting (and getting) the best.
