Love and Labor
Love and Labor: The Unbroken Law, a work by sculptor George Grey Barnard and carver Furio Piccirilli, is installed at Pennsylvania's beautiful State Capitol building. Twenty-seven figures represent man's "prospering in measure with his fulfillment of the laws of God and nature."
The Carrara marble work was originally commissioned around 1902 along with a sister sculpture for $700,000. The commission was reduced in size, possibly due to political graft, down to $180,000 plus separate private donations.
Carrara marble is named after the Italian town where the material is often quarried. Greek and Roman architecture used the marble on the exterior of buildings and Renaissance artists preferred the medium for many works, including Michaelangelo's David.
