The Unbroken Law
The Unbroken Law
George Grey Barnard, the sculptor of Love and Labor: The Unbroken Law, was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Iowa and Illinois. Interestingly, while he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and lived and worked in Paris for many years, he is buried near this work in Harrisburg Cemetery (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) at the sculptor's request.
Architect Joseph Huston selected Barnard for the Pennsylvania commission, which the sculptor later considered to be his masterwork. The sculpture began as sketches and clay models. His further work on the project moved to France, where financial difficulties forced him to sell a personal art collection in order for him to pay his staff and material costs.
President Roosevelt had an early glimpse of these art works when traveling in France; he attended a Paris Salon exhibit where they were displayed prior to their installation at the Capitol on October 4th, 1911.
